6 Ways to Boost Your Mood

Greetings Everyone,

I hope September is treating you well! If you have seen my posts for this month, then you’ll know this month’s theme is related to self-care. We spend so much of our time worrying, stressing, and other mental (and sometimes physical) self-infliction, so I thought it would be refreshing to see some self-care posts to focus on the inside rather than negative external elements.

This post was actually inspired by a Youtube video I watched recently. A Youtuber named Renee covered four (scientifically proven) ways to be happy. So, I incorporated part of her idea into this post because I thought it went very well with my self-care theme of this month.

So, without further ado, let’s get into the post!


Oxytocin is a chemical in the posterior lobe that is also known as the “cuddle hormone” or “love hormone” because it is released when hugging or socially bonding with others. Ways to increase this chemical include hugs, petting your dog, cat or other pet, conversing with close friends, massage (touch), be kind to others, and more, according to this article. Endorphins grants a euphoria type feeling. This is also known as the “Runner’s High” due to various exercises. Other ways to trigger this euphoria feeling is through chocolate, hot peppers, laughing, music, sunshine, and more.


A protein called tryptophan is a crucial element in creating serotonin. Low serotonin can cause depression, anxiety, and more. Ways to increase this neurotransmitter includes spending time outside in nature, healthy eating habits, meditation, showing gratitude, achieving goals, reminiscing over happy memories, and more.

Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that is known for playing a part in pleasure, motivation, and learning, according to WebMD. Ways to increase Dopamine include motivation, reward, food choices, and more. Click the Youtube video above for more info on this neurotransmitter.


I don’t want to go too much in depth here because I plan on dedicating a post entirely on this topic, but I did want to mention this as a mood enhancer because it does help tremendously. Sleep is more important than you may think.

We have so much to do and so much going on in our lives that we strive to go-go-go when we should probably be sleeping. Have you ever thought that maybe the cashier or the person who answered your phone call was easily snappy towards you because they may have only had a few hours of sleep? Think about it! How do you feel when you’ve had a 3 or 4 hours of sleep versus 8 or 9 hours of sleep?


You can achieve a mood boost by using affirmations also! Affirmations are statements aimed at both the conscious and subconscious mind to ensure a more positive, uplifting, motivational, and inspirational mindset. And, I believe affirmations can also promote greater hope.
